Just imagine the following scenario: four people are comfortably ensconced in a room. Each one of them can watch a film from the Internet on his or her laptop, in HD quality. This is made possible thanks to optical WLAN. Light from the LEDs in the overhead lights serves as the transfer medium. For a long time, this was just a vision for the future. However, since scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI in Berlin, Germany, have developed a new transfer technology for video data within the scope of the OMEGA project of the EU, its implementation in real life is getting markedly closer. At the end of May, the scientists were able to present the results of the project in Rennes, France. They were able to transfer data at a rate of 100 megabits per second (Mbit/s) without any losses, using LEDs in the ceiling that light up more than ten square meters (90 square feet). High voltage non-destructive analysis of winding identifies difficult to detect manufacturing faults - There are a number of parameters that can change during manufacture that may affect the performance of a winding. These parameters, which cannot always be measured with an LCR meter, include change in material as well as shorted and damaged windings. The Wayne Kerr 7720 Impulse Winding Tester uses a very high voltage impulse to stimulate the device under test (DUT). It analyzes the decay waveform to detect changes in material, shorted and damaged windings and other errors. Long term decay of a winding can also be detected. The system used ensures that the component is tested but not damaged during the analysis process. The shape of the waveform is dictated by the Q factor, inductance and stray capacitance of the winding. High Q shows as a slow decay and the frequency of the waveform is determined by the inductance and stray capacitance of the DUT. Importantly, the short high voltage pulse causes no damage to the device under test.

The Chroma 63800 Loads can simulate load conditions under high crest factor and varying power factors with real time compensation even when the voltage waveform is distorted. This special feature provides real world simulation capability and prevents over-stressing resulting in reliable and unbiased test results.

The 63800's state of the art design uses DSP technology to simulate non-linear rectified loads with its unique RLC operation mode. This mode improves stability by detecting the impedance of the UUT and dynamically adjusting the load's control bandwidth to ensure system stability.

Comprehensive measurements allow users to monitor the output performance of the UUT. Additionally, voltage & current signals can be routed to an oscilloscope through analog outputs. The instrument's GPIB/RS232 interface options provide remote control & monitor for system integration. Built-in digital outputs may also be used to control external relays for short circuit (crowbar) testing.

Chroma's 63800 Loads feature fan speed control ensuring low acoustic noise. The diagnosis/protection functions include self-diagnosis routines and protection against overpower, over-current, over-voltage and over-temperature.

Complete AC & DC Load Simulations

Chroma's 63800 AC & DC Electronic Load is designed for both AC & DC Load Simulations. Illustrated below are the various load modes which are available:

AC Load Simulation

The Model 63800 AC & DC Electronic Load provides two unique operating modes for AC load simulation; (1) Constant Load Modes and (2) Rectified AC Load Modes. Each are described below.

Constant Load Modes

The Constant Load Modes allow users to set the following operating modes: CC, CR and CP mode. The CC & CP modes in this category allow users to program PF or CF, or both. For CR mode the PF is always set to 1. The power factor range is limited based on crest factor programmed (Shown as Figure 1). If the programmed PF is positive then the current will lead the voltage waveform. When PF is set negative, the current will lag the voltage
waveform. (See below)

Rectified AC Load Modes

The 63800 AC & DC Electronic Load provides unique capability to simulate non-linear rectified loads for a wide range of testing applications. There are three load modes available for rectified load simulations: RLC, CP and Inrush Current.

Figure 2 shows the typical model of a rectifier input. Under RLC mode, users can set the RLC values to 100% and simulate the behavior of the actual UUT. Figure 3 & 4 compares the voltage and loading waveforms between the actual RLC built circuit and the simulated rectified circuit by using Chroma's RLC load mode. The waveform obtained under
CC mode with the same loading crest factor shown in Figure 5.

For inrush current simulation (See Figure 6), the 63800 provides an Inrush Current mode that allows the user to set different inrush current amplitude and voltage phase angle where the inrush current started.

DC Load Simulation

Chroma's 63800 DC load simulation includes four load modes: constant current, constant resistance, constant voltage and constant power as depicted below. CC, CR, CP mode can be used for regulated voltage power supply testing. For battery charger, CV mode may help to check its current regulation. Many inverter designs, although its input is DC, show an input current and will show rectified pattern. This unique load mode makes the Chroma 63800 load ideal for Fuel Cell, PV module/array and Battery testing.

Comprehensive Measurements

Chroma's 63800 Series AC & DC Electronic Loads include built-in 16-bits precision measurement circuits to measure the steady-state and transient responses for true RMS voltage, true RMS current, true power(P), apparent power(S), reactive power(Q), crest factor, power factor, THDv and peak repetitive current. In additional to these discrete measurements, two analog outputs, one for voltage and one for current, are provided as a convenient means of monitoring these signals via an external oscilloscope.

Timing Measurement

Timing parameters are critical to many products such as UPS's Breakers and Fuses. The 63800 AC & DC Load also includes a unique timing and measurement function to measure the trip time of fuses & circuit breakers or the transfer time for UPS's (Off-Line).

Automatic Bandwidth Adjustment (ABA)

When the UUT, such as one shown in Figure 8, has a higher output impedance, the current waveform will not be stable without ABA. In most cases, the loading current will be oscillating and spoil the test.

Note 1: A test current will be programmed prior the actual loading defined by user for impedance detection.

Parallel / 3-Phase Control

The 63800 series provides parallel and 3-phase functions for high power and three phase applications. All the models within the 63800 series can be used together for both parallel and 3-phase functions as well as paralleled AC Load units in a 3-phase configuration, providing excellent flexibility and cost savings for the 63800 series AC load.

Auto Power Factor Correction

Setting the power factor is one of the major features to the 63800. The power factor is defined as:

Since PF is a function of real time voltage and current, traditional AC load designs assume the voltage waveform to be sinusoidal all the time, as seen Figure 13. This is not realistic because the voltage waveform may be distorted after the load is applied shown in Figure 14.

Sartech ARG5410-MKII Handheld Sarsat Beacon Tester

The Sartech ARG 5410 MkII hand-held receiver provides accurate, independent checks of the correct operation of COSPAS/SARSAT distress beacons, such as EPIRB, ELT and PLB. It can be connected directly through a suitable attenuator, or will recieve the radiated signal using it's own antenna. Radiated tests should be carried out using the beacons own self-test mode, if provided, or a screened room or enclosure. The 5410 MkII comes complete with user friendly software, designed to guide the operator through the test procedures, with received signals decoded into plain English. Messages are time-tagged and stored, and can be viewed on the internal LCD display. Alternatively, by using the serial data output, data can be downloaded to a printer or PC.

ARG5410 MkII meets and exceeds the following IMO requirements for test equipment for annual testing and shore-based maintenance of EPIRBS:

NTIA, with input from the Policy and Plans Steering Group (PPSG), produced a Ten-Year Plan and Timetable (hereafter referred to as the Plan) to meet the President’s 500 megahertz goal. The Plan, dated October 2010, identified steps to determine candidate bands, to assess their feasibility, and to identify the actions necessary to make spectrum available for broadband wireless services. The Plan also described the processes and timetable for executive branch actions in support of the Administration’s goal. Fully implemented, the Plan requires consideration of a number of factors, including technical and operational considerations of Federal systems and non-Federal broadband wireless systems, the costs to evaluate and implement sharing methods or relocate Federal systems, and the identification of comparable spectrum for relocating an incumbent system. Time Electronics 5025 Multi Instrument Calibrators - Are calibrators with a wide range of capabilities to cover multiple functions and a modern day necessity. The 5025 is the ultimate multi-product calibrator, designed for both traditional and new measurement equipment. The 5025 can calibrate, bench and handheld multi-meters, frequency meters, ohm meters, ac/dc millivoltmeters, thermocouple indicators, clamp meters, temperature indicators, timer counters, oscilloscopes and many other measurement devices.

Simple Operation Functions and ranges are easily accessed from the front panel. Increase and decrease keys per digit, are used to quickly set the output value. Deviation control then enables the user to finely adjust the output value as a percentage (+/-9.999%). All this information is shown on a clear, easy to read LED display.

Flexible Options The 5025 can be equipped to specific requirements. The standard unit is fitted with AC/DC voltage to 1050kV, AC/DC current to 22A, digital frequency to 10MHz, decade resistance to 1G ohms, conductance and thermocouple simulation. Individual options include; capacitance and inductance, full range resistance (incorporating PT100 simulation), power calibration and oscilloscope calibration. These options can be specified at time of order or fitted at a later date by an authorised service agent. In addition external adaptors are available for clamp meter calibration (up to 1000A), optical tachometer calibration and low noise attenuation.

Calibration Made Easy Connect the 5025 to a PC/Laptop (via RS233, GPIB or USB) installed with Time Electronics EasyCal software and automate the calibration process. Increase speed of calibration and consistency of results, produce calibration certificates and reports to ISO 9001 quality standards.

Multiple flow equations are available in a single instrument with many advanced features. The Series 1900 Flow Computer is compatible with Merian Laminar Flow Element, Venturi, and Averaging Pilot flowmeter types. The alphanumeric display offers measured parameters in easy to understand format. Manual access to measurements and display scrolling is supported. The versatility of the Series 1900 Flow Computer permits a wide measure of versatility within the instrument package. The various hardware inputs and outputs can be "soft" assigned to meet a variety of common application needs. The use "soft selects" the usage of each input/output while configuring the instrument. Consider the following illustrative examples. The isolated analog output can be chosen to follow the volume flow, corrected volume flow, mass flow, temperature, pressure, or density by means of a menu selection. Most hardware features are assignable by this method. The user can assign the standard RS-232 Serial Port for external data logging, transaction printing, or for connection to a modem for remote meter reading. A Service or Test mode is provided to assist the user during start-up system check out by monitoring inputs and exercising outputs. The system setup can also be printed.

The Kikusui TOS5101 is designed exclusively for hipot testing of electronic equipment and components conforming to various safety standards. The use of a high luminance, large fluorescent display tube for the display enables data including measured values, status and judgment results to be extremely legible. The Pass/fail function employs a window comparator method that enables TOS5101 to make fail judgment of current leakage over the upper reference value and below the lower reference value which can be set on the front panel. Thus, highly reliable testing can be performed including that for test lead disconnection and defective contact. In addition, in order to prevent erroneous operation and accidents, the TOS5101 is also equipped with a Key Lock function and Interlock function, a high-voltage output terminal having a narrowed insertion port, a large DANGER lamp, and an automatic discharge function (during DC operation) that removes charge from the test piece. These features give the TOS5101 a high degree of safety and reliability.
